Changes and additions to the Mapping Rules

This section contains information about changes and additions to the Mapping Rules and other sections of the Yandex Map Editor help.

2024.07.12
  • Clarified how parking placemarks without a polygon are arranged along class 8 roads.

Placemarks for extended parkings located along a class 8 road and not requiring additional drawing of an area object are placed at the geometric center of the specified parking.

    See 3.8.2.1.1.3.

2024.06.28
  • The “lawn” type can now be used for vegetation polygons, provided they include trees and all of these trees are detailed on the map.

Sections that are completely covered by grass or occupied by trees with detailed representation on the map belong to the “Lawn” type. If the section has bushes or trees (even on its small part) and none of them are drawn on the map, then the section belongs to the “Urban vegetation” type.

    See 3.9.2.1.

  • Clarified that streets may not be linked to a level 4 administrative division (“Locality”) if it's impossible to establish the existence of the locality, or if there are open sources confirming that the street belongs to a higher-level administrative division.

Streets are linked to localities (or municipalities if the country is divided into municipalities and doesn't use the term “locality”, like Türkiye or France), except in cases where it's impossible to establish the existence of the locality to which the street belongs, or you know that the street belongs to a higher-level administrative division.

If two streets in the same locality share the same name, link them to the districts or blocks where they are located according to official sources.

If you can't find information about a street's location in official sources, then link the street to the district or block that it is generally considered to belong to.

    See 3.3.3.1.4.

  • You can draw stairs, escalators, and moving walkways as separate areas in indoor maps if there's a free (or partially free) passage underneath them.

These items may be (but don't necessarily have to be) added to the map when one can freely navigate the floor despite the presence of stairs, escalators, moving walkways, and the organization located below them.

    See 3.18.1.3.3.

  • Regulated the rules for coordinating places and linear items in Yandex Map Editor.

Places must be geometrically consistent with linear items at all map scales (up to 18 inclusive) when they comprehensively display the same object: for example, a parking placemark and the entrance to that parking.

    See 2.5.

  • Described the “seasonal” attribute used for temporary bike paths.

This attribute is enabled for designated on-site bike paths that have a documented location and use span (only employees can edit the attribute).

When drawing or editing the attributes of these bike paths, bike accessibility on nearby roads doesn't change and is set in accordance with the general rules of attributing similar items.

    See 3.3.1.6.5.

  • Added a note to the rules for using the “paved” attribute.

This attribute is automatically enabled when creating a section of the road network (except for class 9 sections) and should be disabled if there's publicly available information that there's no pavement on site.

    See 3.3.2.9.

  • Clarified the rule for drawing sidewalks.

You can draw a sidewalk as a separate line of the road network in places where pedestrians access the territory through a gate (in addition, mark the gate as an entry/exit restriction). You can draw a separate line for the sidewalk in this case, but it's not mandatory.

    See 3.3.1.6.3.1.

2024.06.24
  • You can now draw paths through sports fields and playgrounds.

You can draw main paths with no restricted entry even if they are not actually physically marked.

When drawing such paths, go around field/playground objects. Do not draw paths through goal posts or football “pitches”.

Mark such paths as not accessible to bicyclists.

    See 3.3.1.6.2.2.

  • Outlined the criteria you need to follow to create Indoor Maps for items under construction.

You can create indoor maps for existing facilities, and also for those under construction, provided less than a month is left until their official opening (this must be confirmed by documents, media publications, and so on).

    See 3.18.1.

  • Specified that on Indoor Maps, you should only draw “Hotel” category items on the floors with a reception desk.

    See 3.18.1.7.

  • Specified the Yandex Map Editor's definition of a regular development area.

Vegetation items should not intersect (overlap) with buildings (except for buildings located completely within the borders of vegetation items that are not located in areas of regular development).

Areas of regular development mean areas that are surrounded by streets and that have at least one unabandoned building (this includes private housing).

If an area is not surrounded by roads on one or more sides (for example, it is located on the outskirts of a locality), then its boundaries are taken to be the edges of the private plots or organizations that are located in it.

    See 3.9.1.14.

  • Clarified that only fixed-location chairs should be classified as the “Bench” type.

Do not mark on the map summer veranda chairs and those that are put away for the night.

    See 11.6.1.

  • Added a table with translations of geographical toponym names into Turkish.

    See the Translation rules appendix.

  • It is expressly stated that addresses linked to administrative divisions must be located within their boundaries, except cases where this contradicts official sources.

    See 3.5.1.14.

2024.06.10
  • You can now draw paths to street entrances to organizations with indoor maps.

    See 3.3.1.1.5.

  • Clarified the rules for filling in the Applies to field for “Restricted entry” items.

    See 3.3.1.7.1.

If an organization has no sign but its location inside or outside the building is known, draw the organization's placemark at its actual location.

    See 3.6.1.2.

  • It is now expressly stated that service and technical U-turns and exits from major highways and freeways that are not closed off with a “No traffic” sign are classified as class 8.

    See 3.3.2.1.

  • Added a recommendation for transcribing and translating item names.

    See 3.1.3.2.1.6.

  • Clarified the rules for drawing floors on Indoor Maps.

    See 3.18.1.3.9.

  • Specified that when redrawing roads, you must not move “extra” lines of the road network from the roadbed.

    See 3.3.1.1.3.

2024.05.28
  • You can't create nameless Other terrain items.

Items of this type must always have something in the Name field. You can use typological words if the proper name is unknown or missing (for example, you can create a ravine with the name “Ravine”).

    See 3.11.2.1.

  • Specified that recreational infrastructure includes facilities located in various recreational areas: changing rooms on beaches, shelters along hiking trails, and so on.

See Location and organization classification (15.6.8).

  • Added examples of urban sculptures that can be placed on the map.

See Location and organization classification (1.6.2).

  • Clarified that if a plot of land is created as a vegetation item as opposed to an administrative division, and the name consists of two words (type + two-word name), then the second word in the name should be lowercase, unless it's a proper noun.

    See 3.9.2.2.2.

  • Specified that parking spaces should be placed approximately in the center of the parking lot if there are multiple entrances to the lot (even if one or more of them are dead ends, meaning that one must cross the lot to reach the general road network).

    See 3.8.2.1.1.4.

2024.05.17
  • Added rules describing the use of the “Has no official status” attribute for administrative divisions in the countries of the Arabian Peninsula.

    See 4.8.4.2.

  • Updated the rules for linking regional and intermunicipal highways.

Regional and intermunicipal highways are linked to second-level administrative divisions (“Region”). If there are no regions, they are linked to the largest third-level administrative division that completely covers the highway (“District”). And if there are no districts, they are linked to first-level administrative divisions (“Country”).

    See 3.3.3.1.2.

    See Translation rules (4).

2024.04.26
  • Clarified that when drawing roads, lines should be drawn along the geometric center of the lanes intended for general traffic, including tram tracks where cars are allowed to travel.

Lanes only used by taxis and public transport are still excluded.

    See 3.3.1.1.4.

  • Specified that if the sidewalk pavement is partially destroyed, it is preferable to set the "paved" attribute to “Yes”, but it is also acceptable to disable it.

    See 3.3.2.9.

2024.04.18
  • Specified that you should only consider class 1–8 roads when assessing whether a territory is restricted.

    See 3.3.1.7.1.

  • Clarified the rule for naming organizations that are currently under construction.

If it's already public knowledge that a particular item in the “Location” category will be built, then you can draw this item once its construction begins. However, you can only specify a proper name rather than a category name for the building if you have an official document attesting to this name.

    See 3.6.1.1.4.

  • Specified that for speed cameras, the speed limit value is determined automatically based on the speed limit for passenger cars that is specified in the attributes of the road section targeted by the camera.

    See 3.8.3.2.

2024.04.12
  • Created a local rules section for Colombia.

Described the local rules for linking streets to administrative units, which are related to the country's regional features.

    • For level 7 administrative units (Blocks), the parent should be the administrative division with the smallest area that completely encompasses the block (except for divisions of the Named territory type).
    • Streets are linked to any division of level 7 (Block) or higher that completely encompasses them (except for Named territory divisions).
    • You can link streets directly to municipalities that fully encompass them. However, we recommend linking streets to administrative divisions of lower levels.

    See 4.10.

2024.04.08

    See 3.6.1.2.

  • Clarified the definition of service entrances and the rules for drawing them.

    See 3.3.1.7.1.

  • Relaxed the rule for placing address points inside buildings.

Placing the address point in the center of the building is preferable but not required when creating new addresses, editing buildings (making adjustments based on satellite images), or moving addresses to buildings. This applies to all buildings, not just those located in residential areas with private houses.

    See 3.5.1.3.

    See 3.5.2.2.6.

  • Clarified the rules for naming organizations.

    • If the organization's name describes its activities but doesn't fully match the name of the relevant category, then its name isn't a proper name.
    • The name indicated by the organization owner may only be assigned by the service's employees and should satisfy the rules for naming locations in Yandex Map Editor.
    • If you known an organization's legal structure, specify it in the “Also known as, historical” field. Always specify the legal structure as an abbreviation (such as PAO, MAO).
