Minsk City Hall is both a beautiful landmark and an important symbol of the city's history. But this is a restored building. The Old Town Hall was demolished half a century after Minsk became part of the Russian Empire and the abolition of Magdeburg law. The formal reason was that the town hall "cramped" the square and blocked the view of the cathedral church. But, according to eyewitnesses, the reason was deeper — the building reminded of the old liberties and Magdeburg law, which was considered undesirable in the new political realities. The decision to demolish is signed by Nicholas I. An interesting fact is that about one and a half thousand plaques with the names of city streets were made from the iron roof of the dismantled town hall. The idea to restore the town hall arose back in the 1970s, after archaeological excavations that revealed the foundation, part of the walls and other elements that made it possible to accurately determine the location and size of the historic building. Reconstruction work began only in 2002, and in 2004 the town hall opened its doors to visitors. The building was restored to the way it was in the 19th century, based on archival drawings and excavation data. It is distinguished by its strict lines, symmetry and conciseness. Decorative elements include columns with scrollwork at the top and small balconies with balustrades. The key detail is a 32—meter tower. It has a clock and the coat of arms of Minsk. The chimes every hour, except for the period from midnight to 6 a.m., beat off a fragment of the melody of "Songs about Minsk." There is also a weather vane on the tower. Today, the town hall combines administrative and cultural functions. There are exhibition spaces on the ground floor and in the underground hall. On the second floor, in the hall where the magistrate used to sit, there is now a reception for distinguished guests and meetings. A park was landscaped next to the town hall — alleys with pyramidal poplars were laid, cast-iron lanterns and retro benches were installed, and the territory was paved with cobblestones.

Judging strictly by the architectural canons of neoclassicism of the 19th century, the architect turned over a lot of unnecessary things in the design. I've complicated things unnecessarily. The history of the Town Hall began when the Lithuanian Prince Alexander granted Minsk the Magdeburg rights in 1499. This right allowed the residents of the city to create their own magistrate, which was located in the first building of the Town Hall, built of wood. But its exact location is not known, as archaeologists have not found any remains. In 1582, a new stone Town Hall was built in the square in the middle of Freedom Square. It was at that moment that the Town Hall acquired the very appearance that we can see today, but 60 years later it suffered due to a severe fire. In 1857, the building was demolished, as it no longer represented a special administrative value, hindered, according to the authorities, the main square of the city at that time and covered the exterior view of the cathedral church. In the first half of the 19th century, the Minsk City Hall housed a music school, a court, a theater, an archive, the police, and even a guardhouse. It was only in 2002 that work began on the restoration of the Town Hall, and already in 2003 the building was commissioned, but now it performs a cultural role rather than an administrative one. Minsk City Hall today Today, the Town Hall is the pearl of the center of Minsk and a symbol of independence for the residents of the city. Once inside, you will see the halls and expositions of the museum, where you can see official documents illustrating the development of the city's economy and culture, the first editions of various Belarusian writers, fragments of the first newspaper and magazine editions of the city, as well as various memorable gifts received from European countries. In the same halls you can buy various souvenirs symbolizing the city of Minsk (magnets, sculptures and much more). There is a model of the historical center of Minsk in the large exhibition hall. And on the second floor there is a hall for meetings and reception of honorary guests, awarding ceremonies for the "Minsk Citizen of the Year", athletes and figures of modern Belarusian culture. The annual celebration of Minsk City Day is also held here. The only window in this room is a hi-tech glass dome on the roof. Anyone who is interested in the history of Minsk can visit the Town Hall. I recently visited the Minsk City Hall and was very impressed by the tour! I'll start with the building itself: the architecture impresses with a harmonious combination of historical authenticity and a modern approach to restoration. Inside, the first thing I did was go to the museum dedicated to the history of Minsk. The exposition is built logically and chronologically sequentially — it is easy to trace how the city has developed from the first mentions to the present day. There are many authentic artifacts, informative booths and interactive elements that make exploring the material fascinating. The lower floor with the exhibition space made a special impression. Here I was struck by the architectural solution: a triangular-shaped glazed dome. It offers an amazing view of the sky — you can watch the clouds float and the branches of the trees sway. This creates an extraordinary feeling of connection with the city, with its breathing and rhythm. Commemorative dates are placed under the dome itself — laconically and at the same time very significantly. I would like to mention the museum staff separately. The girls were incredibly friendly and competent: they enthusiastically talked about the history of the town hall and the city, answered all questions, and shared interesting details that are not always found in guidebooks. In general, visiting the town hall was not just an excursion for me, but a real immersion in the history and atmosphere of Minsk. I definitely recommend you to visit — here everyone will find something valuable for themselves: whether it's a love of architecture, an interest in history, or just a desire to experience the spirit of the city.

We attended an absolutely free amazing New Year's performance at the Minsk City Hall!The actors tried their best, danced heartily, and smiled. The show lasts about 30 minutes. There were ballerinas and gymnasts. Mini fireworks. Congratulations from Santa Claus and the Snow Maiden. A lot of people gathered. It was visible to everyone, as the stage was high and had several tiers. It was interesting for both children and adults. The staging and the idea that New Year's gifts and Christmas Tree toys also celebrate the New Year. Such free performances take place every year at the Town Hall. They begin on December 25 and end on January 7. Daily at 17:30 and 20:00 (it is always better to check the schedule in advance on the Internet). Every year they come up with something new - every year it's bright and colorful! Thanks to the organizers for the festive mood. I liked the show!❤️ Happy 2025 to us!
