The Bottom line Stay at this hotel if you want to experience the distinct architectural charm and historic vibe of a Soviet Union-era landmark. However, manage your expectations regarding the service—the hospitality and operations are distinctly mediocre and can be quite frustrating. ## Pros (The Positives) Excellent Location & Surrounding Dining: The hotel boasts a highly central location. There is a fantastic variety of dining options both within the hotel and right outside in the immediate neighborhood, offering plenty of choices for guests. Beautiful Views: Most of the rooms offer gorgeous, scenic views of the surrounding area and mountains. Spacious Public Areas: The hotel lobby is impressively large, and the main restaurant and dining area are spacious enough to comfortably accommodate most guests. Commendable Staff & Housekeeping: The laundry service is highly efficient, and the laundry team is very courteous. The cleaning staff is excellent, consistently cleaning the rooms very nicely every single day. Restaurant : The breakfast options were abundant and the food quality was great. ## Cons (The Negatives) Frustrating Keycard Issue: The hotel has a very inconvenient system where room keycards get automatically invalidated every two days—regardless of whether you have booked a continuous stay of 4 or 5 nights. Discovering your card doesn't work after traveling more than 20 floors up, forcing you to go all the way back down to reception to get it fixed, is a recurring hassle. Unreasonable Water Policy for Families: The hotel enforces a strict policy of only two complimentary water bottles per day. For a family of four staying in a designated family room, this is completely unsustainable. When asking for extra water, the staff routinely denies the request, forcing you to purchase it—a practice not expected from a 4- or 5-star establishment. Unreachable Reception: The front desk is frequently impossible to reach by phone because they leave the receiver off the hook, causing a constant busy signal. To resolve queries, you are forced to walk 24 floors down to address it in person. Disappointing Rooms & Layout: The family room option consists of two bedrooms that feel quite small. The windows are very small, which severely limits natural sunlight. There is ongoing, noticeable construction happening within the building. Poor AC Placement: The air conditioning cooling does not distribute evenly. In the family suite, one of the AC units is located right at the entrance, meaning the cool air fails to properly reach one of the main bedrooms. Confusing Fixtures: The bathroom taps have a confusing configuration where the hot and cold water indicators (the standard red and blue markings) are inverted or counterintuitive to typical systems.

The most famous landmark hotel in Almaty. There are restaurants at the bottom and a bar on the top floor for amazing views of the city. Polite and multi-lingual staff, good housekeeping and rooms of a nice size.
