We visited Minsk on the eve of Republic Day, and rehearsals and celebrations were constantly held at the Victory Monument. The monument is located on Victory Square in the center of Minsk, dedicated to the victory in the Great Patriotic War and serves as a memorial to the soldiers of the Soviet Army, partisans and underground fighters who died in those years. For many Minsk residents, this is one of the main symbols of the city. It is a 38-meter-high obelisk, lined with gray granite. The obelisk is crowned with a three-meter image of the Order of Victory, made of bronze and smalt. The sides of the obelisk are divided by narrow stripes, and they are completed by wide ones, stylized according to the Belarusian national ornament. Bronze high-reliefs are placed on the four sides of the pedestal, which reveal the idea of the monument. These are "The Soviet Army during the Great Patriotic War," "The Partisans of Belarus," "May 9, 1945," and "Glory to the Fallen Heroes." The obelisk stands on a faceted stylobate made of black labradorite. On it is placed a bronze sword, entwined with a laurel branch — a symbol of Victory. The entire composition is placed on a wide octagonal stepped podium. Its four sides are cut through by cubic stylobates made of black labradorite, on which four bronze laurel wreaths are installed, which symbolize the four fronts whose fighters participated in the liberation of Belarus. A lawn has been laid out around the monument and decorative fir trees have been planted. The grand opening of the monument took place on July 4, 1954 and was timed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from occupation. Initially, the square was called Kruglaya, and it received its current name, Victory Square, four years after the monument was unveiled. The eternal flame at the Victory Monument appeared 7 years after the monument was erected, it was lit on July 3, 1961, on the day of the 17th anniversary of the liberation of Minsk. In 1984, during the construction of the Victory Square metro station, the square was redeveloped, it became oval, and a ring gallery was created underground, which turns into a memorial hall. In the center of the hall is a wreath of illuminated art glass. A bronze image of the Hero of the Soviet Union Star and a plate with the names of 566 natives of the BSSR who were awarded the title Hero of the USSR were placed on the wall. On July 3, 1984, a Memorial Vigil began at the monument. Students from Minsk schools take turns on duty at the monument — this tradition continues to this day. On memorable dates — May 9, Independence Day of the Republic of Belarus — wreaths and flowers are laid at the monument. The ceremonies are attended by officials, veterans, delegations and representatives of the diplomatic corps.
