At the moment there are construction works in almost all the area of the fortress. Today (08/08/2024) it was possible to visit only the curch, which is renovated, and it was worth it. The path to Mother Georgia is interrupted. Even with all these restrictions, the view of the city from above is awesome.

I visited this place in early May — I was very lucky with the weather, it was great! It is a pity, of course, that the fortress was under restoration, but its historical spirit and cultural value are felt even so. Well, the views of Tbilisi around are simply fascinating, it's definitely worth climbing for them.

Narikala Fortress is a visiting card of Tbilisi, which is visible from almost anywhere in the historical center. It is built on the steep Sololaki hill, which perfectly controls the entire valley of the Kura River and key trade routes (including the Great Silk Road). Whoever owned Narikala owned all of Tbilisi. It has been the main defensive hub of the city for 15 centuries. The walls of Narikala are a real "layer cake" from history. Originally built by the Persians, it was repeatedly completed and rebuilt by the Georgian tsars in the Middle Ages (the Golden Age of Georgia); by the Arabs; by the Turks; by the Russian imperial army after Georgia's annexation to Russia. Each epoch left its mark here, which made the fortress impregnable. There are not many buildings inside the citadel itself, but there is a cozy church of St. Nicholas, which was restored in the 90s. She fit very harmoniously into the ensemble. Today, Narikala is not just a monument. This is the best observation deck in Tbilisi. The postcard panorama of the city opens from here. Be sure to go up to see the whole of Tbilisi in the palm of your hand.

The historical component here is much more interesting than the fortress itself. The first citadel was built here already in the IV century, although it was then called Shuris-Tsikhe. As is usually the case, the fortress was destroyed and rebuilt several times. As a result, only a part of the Istanbul Tower and the skeleton of the Shahtahti Fort have survived to this day. The Church of St. Nicholas was rebuilt from the ruins in 1997, the restoration of the fortress itself is in the process, and sluggishly ongoing. It is possible to climb to the citadel only on foot, the passageways are blocked from the side of the cable car due to repairs (at least for the duration of our visit). But the panoramic views are good here, although you can see almost the same views by taking the cable car from Rike Park.

Ruins of an early Medieval fortress. The parts that have survived to this day belong to later periods. The central part of the panorama of Old Tbilisi. The fortress offers the best views of the city. You can climb either on foot or by cable car. I recommend combining the visit with the stunning Botanical Garden, which stretches just behind the fortress wall.

You can get to the fortress from the other bank of the Kura by the Turtle Lake cable car or on foot, uphill, from the Old Town. A fortress with a history, I recommend taking a local guide and listening. It offers magnificent views of the city. The visit is free! Visit the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the Fortress itself (free of charge), on the left side, the entrance to the arch. You can buy candles if you are a believer. Inside, the attendants speak Russian, and they can tell you from the icons. They are different from Russians. The fortress itself was bypassed from the left, going down to the Botanical Garden. We got to the Fortress by car: we are very glad that we took the Comfort fare and drove in a normal car, because the last 100m was such a steep climb that even the taxi driver was driving automatically with his hand on the handbrake))).

Начнем с плюсов: очень красивый вид на город, внешние стены в хорошем состоянии, если не подниматься на верхнюю часть, то в целом безопасно. Теперь важные минусы - будем честны, эта крепость представляет собой развалины в аварийном состоянии, крайне опасный объект. Я в шоке, что пускают людей в верхнюю часть крепости. Нигде такого ужаса я ещё не видел. Нужно поднимался по узкой тропинке и у вас есть прекрасный шанс упасть с обрыва в сторону ботанического сада на смерть. Люди лезут на стены, которые частично разрушены, забираются на самые верх по руинам башни. Это крайне опасный объект, подниматьсы на самый верх с детьми просто преступление ! Я обескуражен поведением властей города, такой безответственности я ещё нигде не видел.

July 2026 the fortress is closed for repairs, we climbed in 33 degrees of heat for the sake of visiting, but we could only get into the temple, the rest of the territory is under construction. I think that it would be possible to put up a sign for tourists with information at the bottom about the reconstruction, since the ascent is very difficult.

Крепость находиться рядом с смотровой площадкой на которой стоит памятник Мать-Грузия, сохранена в хорошем состоянии убрано и чисто. В крепости есть храм. В крепость можно подняться как своими ногами пешком, так и на фуникулере. Мы ходили пешком и на верх и вниз. С крепости открываться превосходный вид на город.

Красивое место. Оттуда отличный вид на Тбилиси и ботанический сад. Сама крепость сильно разрушена, но походить по старым стенам было интересно. Очень жаль, что нет никаких ограничений для такого лазанья.. Люди буквально ходят на или под покосившимися и треснутыми стенами и нигде никаких табличек вроде "Не подыматься" и пр..

Интересное и красивое место. Отличные виды. Посещение бесплатное. Фуникулёр есть, но если нет проблем с здоровьем, детьми и ленью, то и без него ок. Многие пишут про отсутствие безопасности и отчасти это правда, некоторые места неогорожены от обрыва, а тропинки крутые и скользкие. Нужно соотносить свои возможности, а обувь лучше с хорошим протектором. Все равно рекомендую к посещению. Туалет платный.

Стоит посетить. Обязательно , кто будет в Тбилиси. Крепость очень красиво подсвечена вечером, выглядит потрясающе. А днём из крепости открывается великолепный вид на город. Можно подняться пешком, а можно и на фуникулере
