Gogia Fortress (Gogia) This is one of the fortifications that protected strategically important roads in the Borjomi Gorge. The earliest documented information about the fortress dates back to the 16th century. The exact time of its construction is unknown, but there is speculation that it could have been built before the 14th century, as similar rectangular towers are absent from Georgian architecture after that era. The fortress belonged to the Borjomi feudal lords Avalishvili. The name comes from the name of one of the family members. Strategic importance. Gogia was part of a network of fortifications that communicated through a system of campfires to warn of the approach of invaders. In the late feudal period (XVI–XVIII centuries), the fortress underwent significant reconstruction. In the 19th century, the fortress served as a watchtower: first it was used by the Georgian police, then by the Russian military. During the war with the Turks in 1828, a detachment of forty Georgian militiamen under the command of Vezirishvili defended the fortress from Turkish troops. In the second half of the 18th century, the constant attacks of the Avars forced the Avalishvili family to leave the valley and move to Shida Kartli. Today, the fortress is in ruins. It is located on a prominent hill northwest of Borjomi, about 2 kilometers from the city center. The ruins of the fortress overlook the city and the valley of the Borjomula River. But if your soul asks for an even better view, then you have 800m of the way and 300m of climbing to the crosses.

If you walk on foot through the marginal areas of Borjomi, you can reach the ruins of the ancient fortress on an elevation. There are beautiful views of the city from there.

Gogias Tsikhe (Fortress of St. George from Georgian) is located not so far from the center, it is easy to get to it - from the bus station and the central market, go to the opposite side of the street and where there are vast Canadian plane trees, go up St. Nino Street, between the Museum of local Lore (former royal chancery) and the school, climb and turn to the right on Pirosmani Street. Walk along Pirosmani Street to the first left turn up near Pirosmani house 22 (there is a number plate on the house) and exit higher onto Gogias Tsikhe Street. On Gogias Tsikhe, turn left and then immediately right up the alley to Guesthouse Gurami (marked on Yandex maps) or Guesthouse Ano'e (on Google maps). There begins a mountain path to the left-up towards the fortress. The climb is not steep, as if along the mountain, it takes about 10 minutes to walk. From the fortress there is a wonderful view of the whole Borjomi!

There is nothing special in the fortress itself, worse than the others, but the view from there is very cool and it is very easy and quick to climb it.

It wasn't a well-maintained place, there was no sign of the fortress on the road, and parking was problematic.

Gogia Fortress has been mentioned in historical sources since the 16th century. The name Gogia comes from its owner. The fortress belonged to the Borjomi feudal lords of Avalishvili. The gorge and fortresses witnessed the battle between the external enemies and the battle itself between the Avalishvils too.

The fortress is almost destroyed, almost nothing remains, it is not being restored. Honestly, there's nothing to watch! But there are very beautiful views of the city.
