Our guide arranged a meeting for us at the Colchis Fountain in the very center of Kutaisi. This is a huge beautiful fountain, which is located in the very center of a busy traffic ring. It is not so easy to approach it, there is no pedestrian crossing. I had to run across a fairly wide street in front of the cars. But the drivers, apparently, are used to this behavior of tourists and politely let them through. A pedestrian lane has been left around the fountain itself to bypass it and view this beauty up close. But there are no benches or greenery around, according to the guide, this is the most expensive fountain in Georgia. The fountain has several tiers, and 30 gilded animal sculptures are displayed in a circle of three tiers. These are copies of figurines found by archaeologists during excavations of the ancient powerful and rich Colchis (ram, tiger, lion, deer, sheep, tur). The fountain is crowned by two figures of horses, according to legend belonging to the Colchian king Eeta. A very beautiful structure with a golden hue, the fountain is illuminated in the evening. Water in the heat is pleasantly refreshing with splashes. As the guide told us, at this very place, before the fountain was erected, various structures and monuments alternated, which were demolished and installed by others. Until 1924, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral stood here, which was demolished and a monument to Lenin was erected, which was later replaced by Stalin, and in turn by an equestrian statue of David the Builder. Only David the Builder was lucky. It was not demolished like all the previous ones, but moved to another place.

The fountain is located in the very center of Kutaisi, on David Agmashenebeli Square (King David the Builder Square). The fountain was opened in 2011 by the Georgian architect David Gogichaishvili. The grand opening was attended by the then President of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili, who called the construction the most expensive fountain in the country. Interestingly, before the fountain appeared, there was an equestrian monument to King David the Builder on this site. It was moved to the railway station to free up the square. It is a cascading structure with several tiers, decorated with about 30 gilded figures. All of them are enlarged copies of ancient Colchian artifacts (jewelry and Bronze Age figurines) that archaeologists found during excavations in the Colchian lowland. The originals are kept in the Georgian National Museum. The horses on the top are a reference to the famous golden pendant with the horses of the Colchian king. There are figures of a lion, a ram, a tiger, a sheep, a mountain goat (tura), and a deer on different levels. The statue of a toastmaster with a horn of wine is a symbol of Georgian hospitality. The golden lion is a replica of a statuette found in the Alazani Valley (3rd century BC). The image of this lion can also be seen on a 5 lari bill. Kharaguli stone, gilding and blue mosaic were used to decorate the fountain. The fountain's name refers to Colchis, an ancient country that was famous for its fabulous wealth in the ancient world. It was here, according to the ancient Greek myth, that the Argonauts went to get the golden fleece. Thus, the fountain is a visual embodiment of the connection of a modern city with its ancient past. The backlight turns on in the evening. It is not possible to approach the fountain "legally", as there is no pedestrian crossing.

The fountain was built in 2011. The architect is David Gogichaishvili. It seems to be the most unusual fountain in Georgia and probably the most expensive. The figures are lavishly gilded, there are exactly 30 of them. These are magnified copies of archaeological finds made at different times in different parts of the Colchian lowland. Ram, tiger, sheep, bull, tur, deer, horses of King Eet. It is believed that this fountain is about the Golden Fleece. But in fact, it's not about legends, but about the real historical past. It goes back thousands of years. The originals are made of gold and bronze and are kept in the Georgian National Museum in Tbilisi. Their age is 5-6 thousand years. Even then, this place was bustling with life, and people decorated it with these figurines. Each carried a symbol, a purpose, and its own philosophy.
