Cathedral of Christ the Savior: The Pearl of Uralsk The second day of my trip to Kazakhstan was marked by a visit to the majestic Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Uralsk. Like many Orthodox churches, it impresses with its architectural beauty and grandeur. The temple was erected in memory of the 300th anniversary of the service of the Ural Cossack Army of Russia. Its foundation stone was consecrated on July 31, 1891 in the presence of Tsarevich Nicholas II, the future emperor, during his return from an Oriental trip. It was built on Ikanskaya Square (now defunct), named after the victory of the Cossacks in the Battle of Ikanskaya. The temple was designed by St. Petersburg architect V.N. Chagin in the Novomoskovsk style. The temple is surrounded by eight bastions, two of which show the dates 1591 and 1891. Previously, captured guns captured by the Cossacks were placed on the bastions, but their current location is unknown to me. The construction of the temple lasted 16 years, and in 1907 it was consecrated. Many residents of Uralsk call it "Golden", and I agree with them: this is probably the most beautiful church in the city. In Soviet times, the temple was closed and used as a museum of atheism and local history, and a planetarium was located in one of the domes. It was only in November 1990, after a rally, that the church was returned to the faithful. Thanks to donations, the church was restored and converted for worship. Currently, all restoration work has been completed. The temple was painted, as the old frescoes have not been preserved. The painting was done by the Ukrainian icon painter A. Menzak. The roof and domes were restored, and a new set of domes was purchased, the largest of which, Svyatoslav, was installed in October 1995 at the expense of entrepreneur Valery Surkov. A small disadvantage is the ban on photographing inside the temple. The interior is amazing with the splendor of the frescoes, but after taking only a few pictures, I was politely asked not to take pictures. Apparently, the interior is carefully guarded from prying eyes.
