It has one of the most beautiful mountain views in Georgia. 🏔 The Peoples' Friendship Arch is located near Gudauri, right on the Georgian Military Road. Therefore, it is very convenient to include it in the route from Tbilisi towards Kazbegi. The arch itself is a huge semicircular structure with bright mosaics. But most of all, I was impressed by what is behind it. You come to the edge and an incredible panorama opens up in front of you: a gorge, green slopes, mountains and a small river far below. 💰 The visit is free of charge. You don't need to buy any tickets: you can safely walk, take pictures and enjoy the views. The Council: • If you're traveling in the summer, take something warm anyway. In the mountains, the weather can change quickly, and because of the wind it can be much cooler than in Tbilisi. When we visited, it suddenly started to rain.

The Peoples' Friendship Arch in Kazbegi was built together with the observation deck in 1983 in the name of friendship between the Russian and Georgian peoples. The Friendship Arch is the inspiration of the famous sculptor Zurab Tsereteli. The observation deck was built at an altitude of 2,384 meters and is a mosaic panel, which was very popular among sculptors of that era. In response, a memorial monument was erected in Moscow on Tishinskaya Square, also by Zurab Tsereteli. "Russian" "Brotherhood", ""Unity", "Labor", and "Peace" are depicted on the column. Parking is paid, admission is free. I recommend a visit.

In May 2026, I visited the Peoples' Friendship Arch — and this is the case when the road and the stop are more valuable than just a "tick" in the list of attractions. You're driving up the Military Road‑The Georgian road, and the path itself adjusts to the right mood: mountains, serpentine, the feeling that you are driving through history. The arch itself stands at a height of more than two thousand meters, as if it overhangs the valley — it takes your breath away a little, and not only from the height, but also from the scale of the panorama. Inside is a mosaic by Zurab Tsereteli: there are a lot of details, I want to look at it for a long time. There are scenes from a common story, quotes, ornaments — it's like reading a story without words. The views from the site are separate emotions. A valley stretches below, the bends of the river are visible, and stone ridges surround it. The weather was clear, and the mountains looked as if they had been specially built for the shot. The photos are spectacular, but it's better to just stand and look: no picture conveys this vastness. Nearby there are souvenir shops and places where you can have a quick snack. There are a lot of people, but if you take your time and choose the moment when the flow of tourists subsides a little, you can calmly look at everything and even sit, listen to the wind and silence between the noise of cars. As if they had specially made such a "breathing observation deck". And then there's this idea of friendship embedded in architecture: not as a slogan, but as an image — through patterns, plots, and a shared view into the distance. I definitely advise you to stop by, even if you are traveling in transit. And it's better to put in a little more time than it seems necessary: here you want not just to run, but to stay.
